What a blast! In the last week of September, a small delegation of the Floryn dev-team took a trip from the Netherlands all the way to Toronto, Canada, to attend Rails World 2024 — the community conference for Ruby on Rails. It was a 2-day conference, packed with interesting technical talks. The conference was particularly exciting this year, with the release of Rails 8. We walked away from the event both energized and inspired for using Rails 8, and the latest and greatest gems in our projects.

Conference highlights

Let’s go through a few of our highlights of this years conference. We put links to the talks, so you can watch them yourself.

Opening keynote - DHH. What a way to kick off the conference! David Heinemeier Hansson, the creator of Rails, fired up the crowd (over 1.000 attendees!) and introduced Rails 8. He is a true hype-beast and really set the stage for the rest of the conference.

SolidQueue - Rosa Gutierrez. A deep dive into the new queuing backend. We are moving to SolidQueue as well, and Rosa did a great job explaining how SolidQueue is built up. Spoiler: it involves a lot of tables.

Demystifying some of the magic behind Rails - Ridhwana Khan. Super interesting behind-the-curtain look at how Rails is built up with meta-programming in Ruby. We use a bit of meta-programming in Floryn as well, so this was a great talk for us.

Closing Keynote - Aaron Patterson. As a self-proclaimed code comedian, he did not disappoint. The talk started with a light-hearted, humorous introduction that had the entire room laughing. But the talk quickly shifted gears, diving into a deeply technical exploration of how Rails 8 has improved the efficiency of booting routes by implementing a recursive descent parser.

If you like to see more, the full playlist of talks is on YouTube, so you can watch them all.

Toronto

Of course, no trip to Toronto would be complete without exploring the city. Toronto turned out to be an amazing city, full of hidden gems! We love how walkable and lively the city is, and the food was beyond impressive. From classic poutine to Laotian cuisine, we tried it all.

We also caught two iconic sports events — hockey and baseball. The energy in the stadiums was electric, and we had an unforgettable time cheering for the local teams (Go Leafs Go! Let’s Go Blue Jays!). As a cherry on top, we managed to fit in a trip to Niagara Falls, which was absolutely breathtaking.
